Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about comparing cost of living

How does MoveNumbers calculate cost of living?

MoveNumbers uses a weighted composite of six spending categories: housing (33.3%), miscellaneous (21.5%), transportation (17.5%), groceries (12.8%), healthcare (7.9%), and utilities (7.0%). These weights come from the BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey. Each category is scaled by metro-level cost indexes to produce a score where 100 equals the national average.

What salary do I need to maintain my lifestyle in a new city?

Our equivalent salary calculator applies cost-of-living differences to 60% of your income (the location-dependent spending portion). The remaining 40% stays constant. Enter your salary and two cities on the comparison page to get your personalized equivalent salary.

Where does the data come from?

All data comes from trusted government and institutional sources: BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey for spending baselines, HUD Small Area Fair Market Rents for housing, Zillow ZHVI for home prices, Census Bureau ACS for demographics and income, and FEMA National Risk Index for climate data. See our methodology page for full details.

How many cities can I compare?

MoveNumbers covers over 24,000 US cities and towns with rent data, and provides full cost-of-living breakdowns for 50+ major metros. You can compare any two cities with available data.

Does cost of living include taxes?

Our cost-of-living index covers everyday spending categories (housing, groceries, transportation, utilities, healthcare). State and local income taxes are shown separately in the tax comparison section on each comparison page, because tax impact depends on your specific income level.

How often is the data updated?

We update data sources as new releases become available, typically annually. HUD Fair Market Rents are updated each fiscal year, Zillow home values monthly, and BLS data annually. Current data vintages are listed on our methodology page.
