MoveNumbers is a free tool that helps you compare the cost of living between US cities using real data — not abstract index numbers. Enter your salary and two cities, and estimate how your budget could change in a new location.

Our Data

Figures are estimates based on public government datasets, third-party data, and the assumptions used by our models:

  • •Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) — Consumer Expenditure Survey and Consumer Price Index
  • •HUD Fair Market Rents — Rental cost estimates by metropolitan area
  • •US Census Bureau — Population data, geographic data for 24,000+ cities
  • •IRS — Federal tax brackets
  • •Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) — Regional Price Parities
  • •Zillow and OpenStreetMap — Home-price data and mapped road attributes
