How Walkable Is Your City, Really?
Most walkability scores measure proximity to coffee shops. Ours measures whether you'll actually feel safe crossing the street. We analyze every road segment — speed limits, lane counts, sidewalks, lighting — to calculate a stress-aware walkability score.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is MoveNumbers walkability different from Walk Score?
Walk Score measures proximity to amenities like restaurants and shops. Our score measures road-level stress — how safe and comfortable it actually feels to walk, based on speed limits, lane counts, sidewalk presence, lighting, and traffic calming measures.
Where does the data come from?
All road infrastructure data comes from OpenStreetMap (ODbL), a collaborative mapping project. We analyze every road segment in each city and score it based on pedestrian-relevant tags.
What factors increase a walkability score?
Sidewalks, bike lanes, street lighting, traffic calming measures, and lower speed limits all improve a city's score. Residential and pedestrian streets naturally score higher than arterials.
What factors decrease a walkability score?
High speed limits (over 35 mph), multi-lane roads, highways and trunk roads, and missing sidewalks all decrease the score. A six-lane arterial with no sidewalk scores near zero.
Why might a city score lower than expected?
Our score reflects the average across ALL roads, including suburban arterials and highways. A city might have a great downtown but score lower overall due to car-dependent outer neighborhoods.
How often is the data updated?
We regenerate scores periodically from the latest OpenStreetMap data.
